Since I have been a PC gamer for ages now, I have never and will NEVER pay to access a console's online component. Also the whole leveling up aspect of modern shooters is something I've always been against in a FPS. It's strange to me how excited some people get out of this years CoD or BF, when the core concepts generally remain the same. I had plenty of fun memories with Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament and even a bit of Crysis 2 on my PS3, but it's not something I feel I'll ever get invested in again. I can't imagine ever caring about my K/D ratio ever again. I'm not sure how people never tire of getting kills and/or leveling up for access to new gear. I feel like this play style meshes really well with patient gaming. My kids are young, but once they're older I plan to bust out some local multiplayer gems.

Maybe once or twice a year I get drunk and play Nazi Zombies on my PS3 since it still has free multiplayer, but I hate how I'm stuck there for an hour + with no ability to pause so I usually rock single player with that game too. I still play Diablo 2 online once in a while, but I play single player about 95% of the time. Most gamers spend more than the cost of the console itself to keep their multiplayer paywall access active.Īdmittedly if I were still primarily a PC gamer I'd probably still play a few games online. What I pay for the game itself is all I will ever pay, with the exception of "expansion pack" style DLC, e.g.

Keeping my PS3 and PS4 disconnected from the internet, I see so much less clutter. It's so nice being able to hold my PS button and pop my console into sleep mode in 5 seconds, knowing I can pick up right where I left off when I find the free time.Ĭlutter. I don't like being the dick that drops out of a match and screws over a team 15 minutes into a round, but I've got a couple kids and a busy life.sometimes shit happens. I can play however long I want, and stop or pause whenever I want. I never concern myself with keeping up with the strategies in a FPS or keeping my gear and level up to spec in an RPG/MMORPG. Once in a while I buy a game on day 1 on a whim, but I never feel pressured to do so. Most PS4 titles I own, I paid $20 or less for. PC doesn't suffer from this outside of MMO's, but I will never pay a monthly fee to play console games online out of principle. More fun to absorb myself in an immersive RPG world or something. Seeing Dankyoloswag420 running around, shrieking into his mic, hard to get into that. I've fully transitioned back to single player gaming, and I have to say I absolutely love it. In 2017 I have not played a single multiplayer game. Having grown up with PC gaming in the 90's and 2000's, the idea of paying for multiplayer access never sat well with me.Ĭouple that with the fact that the later you buy a game, the less likely you are to find an active MP community, and me being burnt out on them, I bought my PS4 solely for single player games. My focus started prioritizing single player games more and more.įast forward to 2016 when I bought my PS4. I played a few rounds of Mario Kart, BLOPS Nazi Zombies, Street Fighter 4 and Dark Souls PVP online, but I realized I wasn't into it that much anymore. I returned in 2011 with a Wii, then picked up a PS3 in 2012. AAA games became a bigger force and originality seemed to dwindle, etc. Online gaming became too big of a focus and single player games suffered. I took a few years off of gaming around 2005-2010 because the trends at the time didn't impress me. It was new, it was different, and I enjoyed the competition. Doom, Unreal Tournament, Counterstrike, Quake 3, Diablo 2 PVP etc. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games Listīack in the 1995-2005 range I was really into online gaming.
